I hate the 2.8. I don't know why They ever used that engine. Rated at 95 hp and 16 mpg, whereas the 2.5 Iron Duke got 20ish mpg for the same power... I went through >$100 a week in gas with that Wagoneer.

Now, I got another 87 4.0 and I'm expecting the same, plus I'm upgrading it with EV6 fuel injectors and everything I can to get better mpg.
Oh, also I put Ford Mustang fuel injectors on the Laredo, but not EV6. Everything else was stock. It had well over 360k on it.

I don't know why you guys get such bad gas mileage... I get at least 20 a tank and I don't exactly drive conservatively... are your injectors clean? your compression good? clean air filter? I don't do that much to my Jeep for better gas mileage the only difference I think is that my Jeep has always been maintained meticulously by me and the owner before me.

P.S- I got worse gas mileage with K&N filter... big time. Maybe that's it?

Google "hypermilling". It helps. I coast and slow don early for red lights and try to keep rolling until the light changes. Any energy (momentum) saved is that much less I have to use to get rolling again. I also shut my engine off for long red lights.

City I usually get 16ish, and highway overall usually 20-23 depending on where and time of year.

Fill the tank, drive it til its mostly empty. Fill up and record your miles traveled and divide by number of gallons. If you have a gps and can verify the mileage is correct or adjusted. You will want to do this with at least 3-4 tanks to get an accurate reading.

shut your engine off for long red lights? Doesn't it take more fuel to get the car started than to let it idle for a few minutes.

yeah i had a mechanic tell me once that it takes as much fuel to start the engine as it does for it to idle for 10 mins
