[The biggest variable is how you drive them. I'm not hypermiling mine.]

true that.

i retired a 95 saturn sl recently, 5 speed manual.

the clutch was slipping and finally had to be replaced, but i drove it literally until the crank could no longer turn the gears.

during that time i thought a slipping clutch was a liability, but as it turned out, it was an asset.

It's because of that horrible feature known as, "Related Threads". It's easy to lose track and start responding to the wrong thread.

That feature can be disabled in your User CP. I recommend everyone disable it. If I were an admin here I would try to find a way to disable it globally.

It will have 0 effect on the performance of your vehicle. The spacer theory comes from the world of Carburetor Spacers back in the 70's. All the Throttle Body Spacer will do for your motor is give the intake manifold a slightly larger plenum volume. The 4.0L will never exceed the RPM limit of the stock intake manifold plenum.

UPDATE: Since adding the 5.5" RE lift, 285/75R16 Ironman tires and swapping my MJ D44 w/4.10 gears into it, the 96 XJ now gets about 17-18 city and about 20 highway. Honestly, I was expecting a larger drop in mileage than that but I will gladly take what I got.

What fan clutch?! I deleted mine a long time ago in favor of a direct drive hub I machined.

How do you like the 5.5" RE lift? Is it pieced together or did you get the kit with the other front end components? I have a 4.5" Rough Country short arm lift with 33s. It rides rough and a lot of bushings and rubber pieces are worn out. I'd like to refresh the front end and go with a long arm as well.

To contribute to this thread, I have a '96 XJ with 4.56 gears getting about 13 city 16 highway.

I only used the front and rear springs, sold off the shocks, track bar, and control arms. I just reused what I had on my MJ.

Proper gear ratio to tire size choice can do wonders for your vehicle and its usage, so don't just go with "But everyone has xxxx product/brand this or that, so I need that to." Look at and think about how you use your rig, then decide what it really needs. Do I go offroad only? Ok, low gears are better for me. Do I drive a lot of highway or long distance so RPM's and mileage are my top priority? Maybe too low of a gear is not right for me. ETC..

Gotcha. I was interested in how the RE 5.5" lift performs offroad and if it rides like stock or a little rough on road. I know it's a fairly hefty price tag, but you get pretty much everything with it, so that's why it is enticing for me.

I have no regrets about my 4.56 gears with 33s because I may go with 35s later on. It gets up to about 70 mph easily on the highway so I can't complain there. It screams, but it gets there no questions asked. It zips around the city too. And it does good offroad just like the city because the gearing makes for a burst at low rpms. The engine is a little tired, but gives no problems so I can't see replacing it right now. It has about 221k miles on it now. I go off on tangents sometimes. Whoops lol.
