No one is going to get one more molecule of gas mileage out of an XJ, or any Jeep for that matter, no matter what magic they do. Just live with it.
There are some very simple things to do to achieve better gas mileage:

*Make sure to buy a aerodynamic vehicle
*Keep it as low to the ground as possible
*Keep weight down to a minimum
*Go with a high quality highway tire

This entire forum is about lifting a brick, welding heavy (maybe actually used) stuff all over and large tires! But lets re gear so we can "light em up!"

It always makes me laugh when people ask what mileage I get. You know what the best MPG mod I have done?.............. Bought a civic to drive as well.

Some guys may say "I cant afford two cars." Funny I bought mine for 300 and put 600 into it and its a 2001. If you do the math the civic quickly pays for mods on my lifted brick. I need to actually drive the civic more I just like driving my jeep to much! Never fails, drive the lil one to work and coming the other way is a nice XJ of course I want to wave but I look like an idiot in a civic!

I figured out the DD thing some time ago. But it was originally out of a requirement that whenever I went to do anything on my XJ, something broke or took too long and I was out of a ride...

I call B.S. on the 25 mpg claims! You've earned a failing grade in basic math.

Stock 1996 4.0 got 14-15 mixed city driving.
Stock 1998 4.0 gets 12-13 same driving.

Both running 235/75/15 and steel wheels.

All winter I was getting 13/14 combined mileage but the last two fill ups, one was 16 and one was 15, don't know why, but I'm not complaining 1999 aw4 31x10.5x15 aluminum rims ~3in lift 3.55 gears

2000 aw4 stock with bb lift 255 70 15 cooper at3 tires. 3.73 s

Best 18 mpg. Worst 14 mpg

My Avalanche that weighs twice as much and sports a ton of options, running a 5.3 v8 gets the same.
Wife's Commander with 4.7 is also the same.

True, I can't quite afford to replace that cracked manifold and dying catalytic converter.

EPA rating varied over the years, but I think 20/16 is the average for the 4.0L and AW4. That's pretty close to what I get now if I drive nice

I haven't paid attention to the MPGs since I added the bumpers and gas tank skid. but when she was still stock (2000, 4.0, AW4, 3.55, 235/70/15) I would average just above 19 MPG between school (college) and home ~150 miles one way. The best I've ever gotten was 24.X MPG in a convoy of 15 passenger vans.

'87 RENIX 4.0L, no lift, 30x9.5r15 tires. Getting 17-18 around town, just over 20 mpg on highway, and that is with a lead foot. Just ordered a set of 746 injectors, so I'm hoping to see it get even better.

It was 15-16 before I started working through Cruiser's Tips. Good stuff.
