Guy I work with owns an Xterra. He loves his but he feels the same way, Looks tough but isn't.

If you find a manual trans in anything you can buy it cheaper than an auto as it has quite a deduct in the NADA book.
If you want a higher end SUV have a look ay a 99-04 GC like an "Overland" edition the prices are right and have all of the options offered.

You can also expect to get next to nothing on trade-in later. If you try to sell it yourself, you will have a hard time finding a buyer.
I jumped completely over that generation (99-04) and bought my daughter a 2006 Grand Cherokee 65th Anniversary full-time 4X4 last August. Really nice Jeep. She loves it.
I test drove a 2014 and 2015 Grand Cherokee Limited last month. They are fantastic. No wonder they sell so many of them.
