I am contemplating selling my 98 XJ, and looking at a new Nissan Xterra (Pro-4x). Unfortunately i cannot seem to find any listings, or completed sales for 99-01 XJs with the 5spd manual (Autotrader, eBay, etc). Not sure if this increases or decreases the value.
Currently there are no XJs on Autotrader with a manual –ones listed as manual show pictures with auto.
Is there a consensus on what i should be asking?
A few details:
1998 XJ sport 4.0/5spd (170K)(Red w/ grey int)
One family owner (mom bought new in denver, co)
--really driven by little old lady!
All maintenance records (inc oil change) since new (inc original window sticker)
Body is near perfect, no rust anywhere, a few slight dings/scratches
Everything works perfectly
Recently had:
All fluids changed/flushed
New radiator, water pump
New blower motor
New JVC BT Stereo, w/ Kenwood 6.5 speakers
New exhaust manifold (installed 99+ intake and 4-hole injectors at that time)
New Rugged Ridge floor liners (fr/bk/cargo)
New hatch lift struts
New brakes (FR-pads/rotors - BK Drums/Shoes/springs/cylinders)
New tires (Cooper Discoverer 235/75/15) includes 2nd set of wheels/tires

Thanks!!!

Theres some guys out by me that are really looking for XJs with a 5speed. The last one that came up for sale was an '01 had about 120,000 miles. Guy asked $2700 for it and it sold within the hour. Based on that I'd ask $4000 all day long depending on mileage, shouldn't be too tough to sell. If you were closer to me I'd buy it, i'm in the market for another XJ.

Neb. Hell that isn't that far from you and he should take $4k and run with the money. Personally I'd never buy anything "Sight Unseen" most of all an XJ.

$2500-3000 for the Jeep if you can find a qualified willing buyer. For some, the 5 speed is a plus. Appraisal books will downgrade the Jeep for it, because not many can drive a manual anymore. The ones that can usually opt for an automatic for commuting. Automatic has better torque multiplication off-road.

I would think long and hard about buying an Xterra. Nissan is about to quit importing them and is going to stop selling them in the USA. Nissan never upgraded them beyond a face lift. Therefore, the technology and interior are from the 90's into maybe the early 2000s. They have had a lot of transmission issues because the radiator cooling tank busts and sends coolant throughout the transmission. Now you're looking at a $3-4000 repair.

I'd say $3000 in my area.

Thanks for the warning on the Xterra transmission issue. That's a deal breaker right there. Otherwise they did look like a good alternative for an XJ replacement. Good towing capacity, etc.

Based on the information he's given thats what I'd be willing to pay. OP asked for an opinion I offered up mine. If I showed up and it was a POS there would be no sale....duh?

Ultimately, all items are valued at what someone is willing to pay for them.

I might value my XJ at $5000 but buyer A would pay $3000 and buyer B would pay $4000 and buyers C through Z wouldn't pay a penny for it. So whats its real value?

I actually like the looks of the refreshed Xterra. They are apparently rough and noisy with primitive seats inside, and plastic that scars easily. Owners report a lot of expensive issues with them. Many wish they hadn't bought them, at least the ones that post online.

I guess beauty is only skin deep.

I would think a 4-door Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, or Toyota 4Runner would be better choices.

Exterior looks good. Like I said before, I'd probably ask $4,000-4,500. As long as theres no major leaks, and the interior is good. Should sell in a few days tops. (at least in my area it would). Tough to say not being familiar with your area.

Looking at a 6-spd manual xterra, so not sure if problems are Auto specific? Also, with both the FJ and xterra being discontinued, the pool of BOF SUVs available with a manual is now only one (Wrangler), and a nicely equipped wrangler is close to $40K+. Comparable xterra is 30K.

The Nissan Xterra was designed only to look tough...and not actually be tough...so city slickers could feel outdoorsy even though they rarely went there.

If you want better city driving demeanor, go for a 4runner or a land cruiser.

...or just keep the Jeep!

That nice Wrangler may be $40K now, but they have a hella resale value.

It will be cheaper and more fun in the long run.

The Xterra is fixing to be an orphan which really hurts value down the road.

The 5 speed has clutch issues on some of them. Something to do with the hydraulics.

Not meaning to make you feel bad, but if you end up buying that 5 speed Xterra from that dealer, it will truly prove the old saying in the car business: "There's an *** for every seat."
