I know this question is gonna sound " uninformed" ( read dumb) but what is a Renix Jeep ?
I've owned a Jeep for only a month & don't know squat about them in general

Renix
Renix (Renix Electronique) was a joint venture by Renault and Bendix that designed and manufactured automobile electronic ignitions, fuel injection systems, electronic automatic transmission controls, and various engine sensors.

that's right, it's mostly 87-90 as the 84-86 was a v6 model.
but most here consider it the older body style before chrysler did the change in 97.
included in the renix term is the center axle disconnect, or vacuum disconnect 2 piece axle shaft crap...
but worst of all was the bendix ABS brake system by far.

Renix solely refers to the 87-90 4.0 XJ/MJ ... Had nothing to do with the body style. 87 was the first year of the 4.0 and used the Renix MPFI system. In 91 it was replaced by Chrysler's MPFI system (the HO years).
Oddly the throttle body injected 2.5's also were run by a renix designed engine management system.

The 91 on XJ's have a nag light, and a PCM that stores fault codes, and a "memory" that learns your engine and programs it's self for a a number of start/stop cycles after it's powered up. Occasionally the fault codes are useful, since there is so much to go wrong.
Pre 91 Renix w/ECU has no nag light, stores no codes, and has no memory. All is much more simple. One little fuse box, one 02 sensor, just a few relays. (OK maybe 6, not counting the real, solid start relay)
Like Caged mentions, it usually gives you the option to disconnect one front axle. With that your front drive-line, front pinion, and a bunch of stuff in the transfer case and diff, "freewheel"--spin 1/2 speed, if that, when you are in 2-WD. Chrysler "improved" that in 91, so it's always wearing those parts, 4-WD or not. They also saved the production costs of making and installing it, and as a side gain, are selling more replacement parts. The "disco" is likely a only benefit to those of us that only use 4-WD when needed. If yer "Caged" and wheeling, it's just something else that can go wrong!
