I noticed a ticking sound coming from around that area and found it to be this

Guessing you have a 2000 or newer motor. Don't know what it's called but it goes in in place of the distributor.

Top part is the cam position sensor.

The part that goes in place of the distributor is called a camshaft synchronizer.

That is what Rockauto.com has the part listed as. I would assume that its the right name.
