Ok, according to what is written in the thread that 97XJ posted, and this australian guy seems to know what he is doing (awesome mods), u need the thermostat to keep the pressure in the block high enough to void the formation of steam around the cilinders, this would reduce the heat flow and raise the temp.

Jeep Guy mine runs about a needles width past 210 on hot days with the A/C running. I don't worry much until it gets to the next mark after 210.

if it is idling for a while will it get to the next line past 210 with A/C on? Like I said mine will run at about 190 with the A/C on and driving only 25/30mph through town. it's when i'm idling for a few minutes that it starts to climb. like if I was at a rail road crossing with traffic all around me.

I have not had mine to get to that next line past the 210 point on the gauge but that is where would start to worry.

although our temp gauges here are in celsius, mine usually runs between 50 - 75 on a cool day, and up to 100 on a hot day, while driving a long distance on the hiway. (100 is half way mark)
been like that ever since i had an overheating problem and changed the rad, t-stat, and upper and lower rad hoses.

could be a faulty temp sensor, do you have access to an infrared heat gun, you could see what the temp is at and reference it with your gauge.

The hose coming out of the water pump is called the water pump bypass hose, when your thermostat opens at the predetermined temp say 200F the water will circulate through your heater core back into the head. I had a '98xj and had all sorts of heater problems. It started with little heat so I replaced the thermostat and it worked that winter. In the summer it would heat up when the a/c was on to over 220F. One day I left it in a parking lot on a 78F day with the a/c on and the radiator blew up.
I replaced the radiator got a high flow thermostat housing, new water pump, new cluth fan, put in a 180 stat and replaced the heater core (pita!) The 180 stat was great for the summer but winter I switched back to the normal 200 and it was great! Bottom line was the first owner put bars leak in the radiator to (fix) the problem when he really screwed everything up. If you don't get good flow through the entire system the entire system will fail.
