Default What's leaking and from where?

Cleaning up the Jeep last weekend and I spotted some moisture above the cross-member, around the transmission and the transfer case. Haven't noticed any slip from the manual tranny, so my thoughts immediately went to the t-case. Where could the t-case be leaking from? Does it have main oil seals at both ends? What if it is the tranny? Does it have a main rear oil seal? How hard would any of these seals be to fix? Any special tools required?

TIA.

Lay a piece of cardboard under it at night and see if you can see what and were it's leaking by where it is on the cardboard.

why bother posting?

all it could possibly be coming from there is the tranny output or t-case input.

what color is the fluid?

I'll try that, thanks Jon. Also gonna clean up the area to see if I can pinpoint its origin.

Fluid's a brownish color best I can tell.

Wash it down and take it for a ride to see where it's leaking out. Sometimes it can be the engine oil leaking and blown back on the t-case/tranny, as it is with my situation.

The transfer case has a front output seal, rear output seal, rear housing seal and mid-case seal. It could be one of those.

Clean it off really well, then drive it. Then take a picture and post it, that will help a lot.

I'm gonna degrease it good and drive it around at slow speeds so it doesn't get a lot of pressure behind it and hopefully be able to tell where it's coming from. I'll post up what I find. And if I can borrow someone's camera I'll post pics.

I don't think it's the engine rear oil seal, as I don't see any moisture anywhere else, just above the cross-member. I'd like to get it addressed and fixed before I drive to New York next weekend.

No harm no foul as far as I'm concerned, Blue. You've imparted your wisdom elsewhere and in my direction, and you at least addressed my question rather than ignoring it altogether, and also padded the thread in case anyone had overlooked it when it was bold the first time around. So thanks for that!

automatics and t-case both use ATF, not manuals though

Hmm... I'm still gonna look into it, just in case. If I can't get it repaired before my 14 hour drive, I'll just cap off all the fluids and look into it when I get back. Thanks for the advice, and I'll keep you guys posted.

30 minutes outside NYC, in Westchester County. My lady gets back from Europe next week, so I'm gonna drive up and visit. It'll be the first time we've seen each other since May 20th.
