Well, it's not the t-case rear seal, and it's not the t-case housing gasket. The leak is originating between the transmission and the t-case. So what all's in there that could be leaking? Tranny rear oil seal? T-case front seal? Gasket where they connect?

A lot of people say "Mine's been leaking for years, but I've never fooled with it." and "It's a Jeep, it's supposed to leak." But I'd prefer it didn't. It's not a BAD leak, but enough to cause concern. Should I reach for some Lucas Oil treatment before I start pulling apart transmissions and transfer cases?

Yes and yes and no. Seal, seal and no gasket. I would wait until the trip is over then I would replace the seals. Check the output and input bearings too. They being a little sloppy can be the cause of the seals going out. This is not so much experience with an XJ as it is with CJs.

Will do. Is they anything particular needed or to watch out for when removing the t-case from the transmission? How hard are the seals to change?
