What do you wrap your hook around to tow a Cherokee when they're totally stock?

I'm talking about if the Cherokee is the one being pulled.

Or is it just wise not to do it?

If you can get to the backand pull it from the hitch thats the safest if you have no tow hooks in the front or no aftermarket bumper. I'd invest in a set of tow hooks

Something like these http://www.streetbeatcustoms.com/Omi...236_05/582927/

No you need to get brackets that tie into your unibody then the tow hooks bolt to that. Do not pull from the bumper! If your really in a pinch pull from the axle....or get a tow hitch for a rear tow point.

I just bought some cheap-o $9 tow hooks and drilled two holes in the frame (the flipping drill bit cost more than the hooks, haha) right behind where the front bumper attatches to the frame, those puppies are solid.

I made the mistake of getting stuck before I put my tow hooks on. I just had the guy attatch his hook right at the corner where the bumper meets the frame, made sure he didn't jerk on the rope too hard, and was real gentle getting it out. Didn't bend anything.

Question though, Mines a mostly stock '98 Sport and has no hitch, where is a good spot to either tow from the back, or bolt some tow hooks to, as it's a fully boxed frame at the back meaning I can't get a bolt and nut on. I also have to welder...

Can you? yes...anything is possible.

Should you? Not if you plan on using them.

The ones in the link above actually mount to the front "framerails", not the bumper.

Haha, I seen a guy once with some big-A 6 inch tow rings painted red, bolted on to his bone stock F-150 bumper.

100% for looks, haha.

As I said before though, I half way got mine unstuck from the bumper once, just really gently, and it wasn't stuck really really bad. But needless to say, I was nervous about it, and I went out and got some tow hooks ASAP.

I had an old s10 blazer with a small lift and 31s and ripped a rear bumper off an FX4 because the guy would not listen when I tried to tell him how weak his rear bumper was. It pulled straight out from the center, where the strap was on the ball, and folded like a taco. His daddy paid for a new one though.

Moral of the story, most factory bumpers are not made for recovery...

This is my opinion others may differ. I would not use front tow hooks without a frame tie in bracket. And the safest for the rear would be a trailer hitch, short of full after market bumpers. I have been pulled and yanked, I have also anchored the full weight of another jeep. The stress put on the hooks are tremendous. These were extreme situations, but just making a point. If you are really really stuck or are trying to get a rolled jeep off the side of a hill your gonna need all you can get.

Mine are just bolted straight to the frame, would you suggest otherwise?

I'm thinking maybe a 1/4 inch plate on the other side of the frame (so it goes bolts, washers, tow hooks, frame, brace plate, washers, nuts) making a little brace?

He is right I broke a strap trying to get a 3/4 ton chevy up to its axles in mud out.Lots of stress, look in your local JY for a jeep with factory tow hooks take them off and put them on yours.Or X2 look into better bumpers.

for the love of god dont use those cheap o hooks for a recovery. u will kill yourself or someone else. the metal is too weak for those hooks. u will pull the hook and bolts right through the frame. just spend the money on quality recovery points. there cheap enough and well worth the investment

Pics of this would be great , and I'm guessing you're talking about the cheap-o hooks from Harbor Freight

I guess you're talking about his front bumper, I had a 96 F150 and the [stock] rear bumper was a beast, was bolted to the frame with 8 bolts.

I am not a fabricator nor do I work with metal so I can't tell you for sure that something "home made" wont work, I know there are people have done it. But if it were me I would just buy the right parts in this case and spend the money, go cheap on something else.
