Ok guys whats the best oil filter to use on the 4.0 is there one that wont allow dry start up after sitting a overnight. I thought it was bad lifters which when I opened it up I found a lot had gone bad but with the new lifters it still rattles at start up but after like maybe 2 sec. Wix/Napa Gold are the same thing, and a good choice. You can also get oversized filters such as the Motorcraft FL1A which some members on here use and prefer

You just can't go wrong with these^^. No need to go any fancier and certainly no need to go chintzier.

Not to hijack but what's the deal with Fram filters on these I6's? I've been running one for a bit now and haven't had any issues that I can tell...

You know for sure you've had no issues? Have you looked inside your oil filter before start-up to see it's empty? Have you monitored the effectiveness of a filter that uses cardboard endcaps and very little filtering media along with a pi$$poor anti-drainback valve?

They're all crap, those frams. It's just we get whammied harder because our filters are upside down or sideways mounted.

Numerous posts in all the Jeep forums where switching from some El Crappo oil filter fixed cold start knocks and ticking.

If there's a Delco filter out there that works for us those are put together well.

FRAM orange units and their similarly-priced ilk (store brand, quick lube) really aren't good for much other than preventing leaks from running without an oil filter at all. Like cruiser54 said they're just too cheap to do their job properly.

A lot of people run oversized filters to extend their oil life a bit. Most Jeeps on the road out there aren't going to be the type of engines you stretch to 15k mile intervals but you can take it further than 3k. Aside from greater filtration capacity, more oil in the system overall means the impact of fuel dillution is less.

Some part numbers:

WIX: 51515
Napa Gold: 1515 (rebrand of WIX)
Purolator: L30001
Motorcraft: FL1A (I believe a rebrand Purolator)
PureOne: PL30001

Mobil 1: M1-301
K&N Gold: HP-3001 (Mobil1 with a nut)

I believe the last couple of years the AC Delco low-end units were switched to the same production as FRAM etc.

EDIT: Whoooops just noticed that this is a Renix thread. WIX 51182 would be the appropriate oversized unit

AC-Delco is now crappola also. Don't fart around. Go with the company who first and foremost provided good filters without screwing us like the others-Wix.

All filters, anti drainback valve or not, will drain (overnight) 1/2 of their fluid if mounted horizontal and ALL of it if mounted upside down. When you start your 4.0 in the morning you not only have to wait on the filter to refill, you also have to wait on all the oil galleys to refill. It is just something that is normal.

Completely disagree. I've gone out and done oil changes on both of my xj's (one with a sideways mount, one with an inverted mount) and both have retained oil over night before doing the change. Provided you use a quality filter you are good to go.

Me, too. Numerous times. Only on inverted mount.

OTOH, my buddy came by with his new 99 XJ and we pulled the Fram off while the engine was still hot. Turned off 5 minutes before. No oil leaked out of it..
