Another thing to consider is (I'm pretty sure) all 2000 and later 4.0 XJs came equipped from the factory with California emissions. That means double the O2 sensors and two pre-cats.

Not all were no. My 2000 has 1 cat and 2 o2 sensors.

Be patient. In NY, you can find 125k miles or less for $3000 or less, and in 1998-2001.

212,000 is pretty low for one that has been driven and not parked, that's only @11,000 a year. 90 is the last year of the renix system so you need to be a bit tinkery to work on one. Downside the renix is not all too modifiable (not alot of aftermarket for the engine), but the computer is very adaptable to the engine you put in it all you need is an inj change, so I've heard.
My 90 now has 431,000 and still gets me where I need to go, along with some mild wheeling.

Well based on the general consensus of this thread, I didn't make a bad decision when I bought a 99. That's good to know.

Yeah, pretty much the 99 is the best of the new style. 96 is the best for old-style BUT with OBDII and reinforced body. You really can't go wrong with any XJ. Although, with the Renix models...not so much, but they have their fans, too.
