Just make sure you follow the proper way of replacing your auto trans fluid...
Is there a specific method for adding fluid? I assumed one got a funnel and dumped the fluid in.

Default I could be wrong

If it's not a daily driver (or if you don't care) I wouldn't be opposed to Type F. The trans will shift harder if you use it... but that's just the thing. Shifting with more conviction, such as it would be, is not hard on the transmission - just the opposite - it is a transmission *easing* from one gear to the next that causes the wear'n'tear.
I have put Type F in all of my demolition derby cars and have never since lost a tranny... but because of the harder shifting, I wouldn't put it in a daily driver because I like my butt to feel all cushy.

I dont understand why this becomes some big thing every time someone asks this question.

The complete answer to this question..

IF its a cherokee, and has an AUTOMATIC transmission (w/ the 4.0 L), its an AW4, and takes dextron/mercon II. The fluid that TOOK its place as and upgrade from II is dextron/mercon III.

The correct is also the same for the t-cases. DexIII.

Dont just throw fluid types out there for people, III is tested and proven to work, i wouldnt chance any of the other dextrons or ATF+ stuff in my rig....any one else I suppose could, knowing what type of risk they take....

Theres no need to even TRY a different fluid in it....III works, and its available.

Sorry for getting a bit fired up about this, but it just bothers me when people throw out other fluids at the OP's on this topic....theres no need to use anything other than the dexIII in the AW4 trans...
I apologize I was just repeating back what was told to me. I insisted upon the D3 myself and was called a moron at the parts store because "the D6 is the new and improved version and runs better"

Ive seen this question on here so many times and so many people have said the 4 was good and the parts places say it too, but I should have just said that I run the D3 and mine runs better.

I just bought mine used and found a bottle of at4 in the back so I drained mine out to put in the d3

Easy there killer....

First.. Don't EVER use that parts store again for a couple of reasons....

Dex III is the replacement for Dex II. Dex III has now been canceled by GM, and has been replaced by Dex IV(4). But until Dex III is no longer available, there is absolutely no reason to run Dex IV(4).

Dex VI(6) is not a replacement for Dex III. It is a low viscosity transmission fluid used in specific applications. More specifically in GM trucks to boost their fuel milage numbers.

If your local parts store calls you a moron.. or doesn't know the difference between something as simple as transmission fluids, how many other mistakes are they making with your money?

The UP rocks. It is like being in a different country. I love it. Many, many years ago I spent most of a winter in a cabin on Shelter Bay (east of Marquette about 30 minutes).

Anyway, good answer. Must be all the fresh air you guys get up there.
