What trans do i have

Just got an 89 xj 4.0 5 speed and wondering how to tell if it has the pugoto or asian trans.

If it's still working it 'aint the Peugeot.

The Peugeot is a 2-piece case with the word "SIMI" cast into the ID plate. See pic below. The AX is a one-piece case.

Could go either way - slide under and have a look. If you see a longwise split along the bottom of the case, it's a Peugeot. If you don't, it's the Aisin. (Assuming OEM, of course.)

Essentially, you're worried about the longwise "clamshell" split - if it's not there, then you're in good shape.
