Default What service things are really required ?

2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport - 108,000 miles.

We treat our Jeep with TLC. Change the oil and filter twice a year - when they also check fluid levels and the belts. Have the engine and chassis pressure washed, and the chassis etc greased twice a year.

We replaced the A/C about 4 years ago. Last year we needed to replace the radiator. When we drove the Jeep to Mexico (about 4 years ago) the dealership gave the car a thorough going over. Since we were planning on towing a trailer they did some work on the differentials. We have the brakes serviced once a year - when they also do a front end alignment. We have replaced the rear shocks about a year ago and just had the leaf springs worked on recently. The tires probably have a couple years on them yet - same with the battery.

We failed emissions testing last year and so had a thorough tune-up.

I was just turning the pages of the owner's manual and was reading all the recommended service items etc. There are a lot of things which we have NEVER done. I don't think we have ever drained and replaced the transmission fluid, nor the transfer case, front and rear axles etc.

Is there anything we REALLY need to have done ?

Edit : We did have the rear seal on the gear box (?) replaced within the last 2 years and the engine and transmission mounts.

Edit : And there is NO mention of ever changing the brake fluid nor the power steering fluid. Do you just refill those ?

Brake fluid is recommended to be flushed every two years. It absorbs moisture from the air and the boiling point of the fluid is reduced. The moisture will also cause corrosion within the brake hydraulic system. The differentials should have the oil replaced at 100k, if not sooner.

All of them SHOULD BE DONE to insure the longest possible life of the vehicle.

I do trans fluid every 30,000 miles on all vehicles.

Brake Fluid - no so much a mileage issues but should be done every 36 months at a minimum.

Brake lines rust out and burst because people do not regularly flush the systems.
