Default What Screws for ‘96 XJ Steering Shroud?

Hello out there!

I have a ‘96 2-dr XJ and I need to replace the steering shroud that covers the steering column, just behind the steering wheel.

I’ve located replacements for the upper and lower shroud, but I can’t find reference anywhere to the specific screws required to join the two shroud pieces together. No place has them for sale either, and I don’t have the originals as the shroud was missing when I purchased the Jeep.

I can tell that three screws are needed, and I would like to avoid trying to shoehorn something in if I can order exactly what I need from Mopar, etc.

Anyway, if anyone can clue me in on this, or point me in the right direction, I’d really appreciate it!

I know they are Torx head T20 or 15...they are a bugger to get at, as a bit wont go up the hole..need allen key style, or Torx screwdriver

personally I would see if the ~1" long screws that hold the plastic side trim are the same thread, and NOT use Torx

pretty sure the Parts Manual calls out fastener sizes

Yea they're T15's. Just had mine off the other day. The two outside screws have threads that are 5/8" long. The threads look like the pic below but the heads are smaller in diameter. The center one is a machined screw with 1" long threads and is easy to access. BUT I have a tilt steering column so that may make a difference. If as awg says the parts manual may call out the fasteners that would be the way to go. From the looks of the pic below I don't believe the head of it would fit up in the shroud.

Looks similar to other trim screws in the Jeep but is torx. I'm guessing to deter car thieves maybe? Who knows. Should be able to get them at nearly any hardware store they don't have to tbe exactly the same. Where did you get your covers? My top cover doesn't snap on one side anymore it broke the hook off and I still haven't fixed ityet.

Thanks! This got me pointed in the right direction, and I looked up the parts manual, which has been a huge help!

Yup. Will probably have to go that route for the upper shroud.

Thanks. Ya, the parts manual is the way to go. Interestingly, it seems like the stopped using the center screw, even back in ‘96. It’s referenced, but has no part number. I’ve seen it for sale anyway, so I’ll probably pick one up and try my luck.

I don’t have either cover currently, but they’re for sale on several sites, depending on your configuration. I have no-tilt, so I’m having trouble finding the top cover, but it’s readily available for Cherokees with tilt.

"it seems like the stopped using the center screw, even back in ‘96."

Without that center screw the shroud assembly is loose. The two outer screws only connect the bottom to the top.

Excellent point. I’ll definitely be getting it then. Still a mystery why there’s no part number, at least in that section of the parts manual.

Couldn't hurt to start a thread in the "Wanted" forum for everything you need. Got to be someone with a parts XJ.

I stumbled on this old thread trying because I had the same question. I'm sure you resolved your problem, but in case anyone else hasn't, the Mopar part number is 4470105, and these screws can be found online.
