I have my 93 XJ up in the air to fix a passenger side front tire rub and came across this bottle behind the bent/ripped up mud skirt.
It was just flopping around in there not connected to anything! It looks like it had mounting points that are long gone but I can see no kind of bracket where it used to hang from. I did find the vacuum tube that it once connected to.
While I am a firm believer that some engineers put extra parts into things just to complicate issues for us, I figure it must serve some purpose and I better reinstall it…
My Question: When I re-engineer the mounting bracket (IE: duct tape or Tie Wraps), Does the orientation of the bottle matter? (Hose up, down, sideways?)
Thanks in advance,
Jay

It's a vacuum reservoir. It's used to keep vacuum on hand for the dash mixture doors at all times. So when the engine is under load and not making vacuum, the doors will still work.
That is the vacuum resevoir that controls that HVAC and other functions on your Jeep. It is a necesary part and should be reconnected. It normally mounts inside the bumper on the passenger side.

Now that it's reconnected, it'll be interesting to see if it has an effect on the heating... BTW what a PIA to get this thing into an area it won't interfere with the inner mud liner! guess it should be done when the bumper is off.

Now that it's hooked up I can hear a what sounds like a door behind the center of the dash slam/pop shut when I switch from heat to vents and the output through the vents is stronger. However, I continue to hear a faint pop from time to time like it may be loosing the vacuum. The hose off the "egg" was awfull britle with it being so cold outside. I may have a leak after handeling and re-routing the line...
Thanks for the input, Have a great TD.

You can relocate it into the engine compartment to keep the vacuum hose safer from the elements... position does not matter... lots of guys do this when they replace their stock bumper with an aftermarket.
