you have over 500 posts and dont know what parts you have?
well to start off your front axle is a dana 30, and rear axle most likely is a dana 35. t-case is either np242 or np231 depending on if you have full time or not. full time 4 wheel drive = np242.

[edit] Manual transmissions
All the transfer cases used on the Cherokee were chain driven with aluminum housings. Command-Trac was standard on XJ models built with 4WD.
The Jeep XJ utilizes front and rear solid (live) axles as opposed to independent front and/or rear axles. This configuration allows the XJ to have superior off-road capability and performance at the expense of some on-road comfort and drivability. Mid-1985 and later two wheel drive models used the same basic suspension with a single tube connecting axle ends with no differential.

You have a Renix based EFI system, a AW-4 Transmission, if it's an auto, a Dana 30 front axle, more than likely a disco version, meaning that it disconnects midway on the pass. side, and a Dana 35 rear axle. They should be geared to 3.55, if you have not changed that. You should have a NP231 t-case, any other questions??
Ya I know I've just never got into gearing in it, but I've been thinkin about getting a locker! So ur positive I have D30 front? What year did they switch to the 8.25 rear?
CF Veteran
all cherokees come stock with a d30 front. the 8.25's are used since 91 and are 27 spline (weaker) and in 97 they had 29 spline. so you have the dana 35
CF Veteran
and one more thing i would HIGHLY recommend not locking your dana 35. look for a chrysler 8.25 they are everywhere
So the info above shows that they did the rear D35 with/without abs & D44 without in '89 so is there an chance that it has the D44? Just hopping! Lol

Ya. Aaron its The Red Rock Monster! Lol
K so I'm running; AW-4, NP231, D30 front, D35 rear, 3.55:1. That's what I'm talking about thanks guys!!!
Now that that's done & I know I have a weak D35! Should I just weld the spider gears & keep my eye out for an 8.25!
I hope the J10 is still in the JY after xmass!!!!!!

I'd wait for the 8.25 or a D44. It would be a PITA to drive that thing to the trails with your rear locked up.
Whats a J10??
Whats a J10??
