That's from a 91? my 89 limited doesn't look like that at all. The retarded PO did all kinds of evil things to my jeep and it was off and taken apart and thrown in the glovebox I heard you can just get a new keypad relative to the code off the chip for it, but don't quote me on that. BTW, does anyone know how to test these bad boys besides getting a keypad and trying? I've been wondering if mine still works...

Its a security cam that was put in all 1984 model year XJs.... Just kidding.
It's for the power lock remote actually. My 92 XJ has it aswell.

You need a remote like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/93-94...Q5fAccessories
The owners manual or sometimes the seller has instructions on how to program it.The downside is most times you have to be real close to the car for it to work.

It holds up the headliner near the windshield.
No joke, I thought it was for keyless remote and it was missing from mine.
So I went to the junkyard and got one.
Installed it in my 96 XJ and now the headliner is up nice and tight!
Well OK, if it was electronically functional it would be the receiver for the remote lock mechanism ... but for me it's just holding up the headliner.
Once I get all my electric lock mechanisms in door cleaned, lubricated and working properly I might look into getting it to work. Until then it just holds up the headliner!

It's the remote door lock control unit for use with the keyless entry system. The 2 button key fob runs @75.00-125 from the dealer or you can find them online cheaper. The unit is the old IR (infra-rad) so you have to have the key fob in line with the unit, so within a few feet from the windows. They are easy to reset and you can do it yourself. You can find the instructions online.
I think the steps are lock the drivers side door, leave door open, hold keyfob pointed at unit while pressing the unlock button, when doors unlock the keyfob is reset. These keyfobs are becoming scarce and harder to find, but some autoparts stores are starting to carry them on special order. After I think 2000 model years they upgraded to radio frequency units which have to be programmed at the dealer for a good chunk of change.

My '92 had one too. My CB is now mounted up there.
Yeah, you pretty much have to hold the remote to the window to get the door to unlock. Around here, you can get a basic keyless entry with remote start installed at one of the many "Tint Shops" for less than the original FOB at the dealer. lol. I installed a remote start/entry system I bought off eBay a few years ago for $45. Works great!

Get the two way remote. The one way I had would start from another signal. I would get calls saying it was on. The two way will tell you if the car is running.
