oh jeeze..ok. Picture time.

The big round thing on the axle that holds the gears is the differential.

This is the front of a 4wd XJ, notice the differential.

This is the front of a 2wd XJ - no differential.

This is the rear of an 4wd or 2wd XJ - both use rear differentials.

Wait it's not front wheel drive what was I thinking xD

Rear has the diff in it but nothing between the two so the front suspension is simple

Dana 35?

Round and oval are very similiar... Im finding it hard to notice the difference between a 35 and a 8.25.
I sorta see the flat lip on an 8.25, but thats about it. The problem is... they look very similiar when crawling under your jeep.

top is 8.25
bottom is some kind of ford/toyota axle, it has a detatchable 3rd member (notice no bolts for a rear cover)

I honestly dont know how people cant tell between a 8.25 and a d35, theyre big time different. 8.25 has a bigass lip, d35 is round.

Quote: Very useful unless someone did a swap. However only a moron would swap an 8.25 out to put in a D35.
Don't say that. Not everyone is a jeep enthusiast like us. Your average joe/jane that drives a Cherokee (and that accounts for a good 90% of people with Cherokees) have absolutely no idea that the D35 is considered inferior. Did you ... before you became an XJ enthusiast? I know I didn't.
Most of my XJ tech knowledge initially came from online forums & Jeeping pals.

Yeah, I kinda feel the same.

Its only inferior for when your putting on larger tires and doing actual wheeling. I'd say for a DD truck that never sees any off road, like 90% of the cherokees out there as you said, a D35 would be a great replacement depending on where you are.

Most ditch the D35s for cheap and seek out better, which drives the cost of those further up. Those D35s tend to be cheaper because of this. I'd sure as hell look for a D35 replacement if it was just a DD and I wanted to save some cash.
