Thicker viscosity's tend to quiet these noises.
It is, my answer was based on what I have experienced with this issue. It can be different on a case to case basis.

Yes. A lot more. Mine is not a wear issue, more like a sludge issue. The 5w works well as it allows the lifters to build pressure from start-up. 10w was knocking like I had troll in there with a hammer.

5w or 10w have nothing to do with the engine at operating temp. the w30 portion is the weight at operating temp.

So 5w30 and 10w30 are the same viscosity at operating temp.

I only have a lifter tap on a cold start, thus why I want the lower vis oil. I have Marvel in her right now and it seems to have helped. Plus from what I have read Marvel is a mild detergent so I'm hoping it cleans as it lubes.

Is your collector clogged maybe? Or (and I'm assuming) its also the cold temps where you live. I've seen oil charts that do recommend a low visc (like 5w)
in temps like 0-90 deg.
20w-50 would be like molasses at 0
lol

Good question. Have I taken the time to drop the pan? No. She runs like a top, plus Im in the middle of sourcing parts for a new engine.

Its about 40* at night so the temps sure are dropping.

My next oil change I'm going with Rotella T synthetic 5w-40. My friend runs it in his '89 and loves the stuff. Its good enough to build pressure for the lifters on those cold CT winter mornings, but will hold good pressure after the engine warms up.

haha why was his face like that? Around here I have no way of getting Amsoil unless I order it online. Nobody carries it (CT sucks). Is there another oil brand that has the right amount of Zinc for the 4.0 besides Amsoil? I just think 5w-40 was a good weight. Good enough for cold starts but thick enough to get pretty good pressure when hot.

Well because he is a Amsoil dealer of course. I was running the competition.

I dont disagree with 5w40, use what works best for your application. We all have different mileage and operating conditions.

The leaks (very small) havent seemed to speed up any with the synthetic blend, as some say they might..
I havent changed the diff fluid, or done anything to the trans or radiator yet. The diff fluid smells/looks new, the trans fluid looks fine, and the coolant is a bright green...
WHEN I TUrn my jeep off it sounds like the oils is dripping in side the block? that normal, dont see any leaks, also when i turn the ignition i have to turn 4 about 3-5 seconds before it turns over, it always will turn over unless i release the ignition too soon? my first jeep so i am learning its habits.i have a 89 with the 4.0liter
also why is the zinc such a issue with th ejeep and does this pertain to me living in s fla temps 50 to 100 degrees range lots of humidity
