Default What is an Impulse transmitter

hey! I’ve been chasing an issue in my Cherokee XJ ‘99 for a month now and swung by the mechanic to get a second opinion. They test drove it and told me the “impulse transmitter” is the issue and needs replacing.

What is is an impulse transmitter? I’ve been google and I found some parts for sale from Bosch that use those words but apparently the parts are for a Porsche.

They’ve offered to fix it for 200 bucks but I can’t find any info online about a Cherokee “Impulse Transmitter” - is it related to the ignition system?

If I had to guess, they are talking about your distributor or at least the electronics inside it.

Called them back to realllllly figure out what they meant - they are talking about camshaft position sensor Ż\_(ツ)_/Ż

Just ordered one off rockauto - let's see if it's really the culprit

Hope you ordered the Mopar one. Lots of people have had bad luck with the cheap ones.

Do you happen to have a part number for the Mopar one? RockAuto only has Omix-Ada camshaft position sensor

Unfortunately, I do not. Never had to buy one. I am sure someone else will pop in with the number.

The impluse transmitter is part of the anti-gravity system in the warp engines of most standard federation starships.

Omix-ada parts usually have a part number in parenthesis. That is the Mopar part number. Type that number into the 'Part Number Search' and select Mopar from the manufacturers list. I have found quite a few Mopar parts in Rockautos inventory that way. For whatever reason, some of them will only show up using this trick.

Alright! The Omix-ada part number shows 4897023AA next to it. I did some searching and amazon has told me this part wont fit my jeep. I also have the FSM for 1999 Cherokee and it does not look the same as the camshaft position sensor in the images/sketches. On ebay, I contacted a seller of this part to ask if it would fit my 99 Cherokee, they replied that it would not. The explanation I received was: "So the cam sensor was called something different for your year model and it's in the distributor. It's called the switch plate 56041030"

I started digging into that part number and sure enough amazon says that it will fit. Also the picture on the item looks just like the image in the FSM.

Went back and bought the part on ebay from the seller for pointing me in the right direction

I think RockAuto has the incorrect part listed for Camshaft Position Sensor on 1999 Cherokee .. but I'm not expert.

Lets clarify something. Are you talking about the cam sensor or crank sensor? Cam sensor on a 99 is the distributer. The crank sensor is what mounts on the bell housing of the transmission. Only the 00-01 XJs have a true cam sensor and no distributer. The part number you posted is a cam sensor but for the 00-01, not the 99.

Cam Sensor is what I'm looking for not the Crankshaft P.S. -

I took the Jeep into local mechanic as I was struggle bus trying to find an issue. Then while it was there something the diagnostician did yielded the code here: P0340 - Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Bank 1 or Single Sensor

I figured "hey I can replace a sensor" so took it home. Now I've been trying to find what part I need. Did a ton of googling for Camshaft Position sensor and found nothing online I could use for a part number.

Looked up in the factory service manual and found this pic

Looked up on rockauto and the Cam Sensor they have for the 99 cherokee looks nothing like that, so I've been a bit confused.

What I ended up buying was this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/CHRYSLER-OEM-Distributor-Pick-up-Coil-56041030/252932435622 because I wrote in to the shop on ebay and they recommended this part.

Did some more digging and found the same part on amazon.. Amazon knows my year and model of the jeep and they automagically confirmed that it was the right part. I ordered the ebay part.

Hope that's the right part? .. I need a beer lol

Your link isnt working on my phone for some reason. But if the part you ordered is the same as whats in your picture, its the correct part. Thats definately a picture of a 99 distributer not a 00-01 cam sensor. Good job for having a service manual! I still need to get one.

What you found in the FSM is correct. As for Rockautos listing...

Took a look and Rockauto has the correct style part listed under 'Distributor Pickup Coil'. The listing for 'Camshaft Sensor' is for the 00-01, and shouldnt be there as is. Wrong part number. Wrong pic. Wrong name? Many, including myself still refer to the distributor pickup coil as a cam sensor when posting in the forums. Even the FSM calls it a sensor. Parts can go by many different names. This being one of them. My mom calls it "that round frisbee thing inside the distributor". Close enough lol.
