the most sure shot way of knowing for certain is to call up your local dealer. Give them your VIN number and ask them anything you want. Ask them everything about your drive line and write it all down and throw it in your owners manual: Engine, transmission, transfer case, gear ratios, what axles you have, if you have a LSD, if it came with any special packages, etc etc etc. They might tell you they don't know....but they do. I had to pull the info out of them. Eventually they transferred me to somebody who transferred me to somebody that had the credentials to look it up.
You can play the 'probably' game all day and you still might not be right. Like "most of the xxxx years came with xxxx, but if you have the xxxx package, then you either have xxxx or xxxxx. Look at your xxxxx to see if it says xxxxx, then you'll know if your xxxxx has the xxxxx........"
just call the dealer. it's free.

Autos should be 3.55
There weren't that many different gear ratio packages. Pretty sure it was either 3.07 or 3.55, so the 'probably game' should be an easy one to play.

Well then, by your standards, the only real way to know is to pull open the diff and inspect.
Previous owners could have changed the gears...even if it looks stock.
And the dealership wouldn't know.
Not to mention sometimes they get it wrong.

Well, knowing for sure isn't anybody's standards...it's, well...knowing for sure. Yes, pulling the diff off and inspecting is one way to know for sure, however, not even completely necessary. another way would be to see what speedo gear he has and GPS his speed to see if it's correct. You'd never have to pop the diff cover open and you'd know 'for sure'. but the 'probably' game is what people usually try to do to help, which is fine. I suggested the sure shot way of knowing what his Jeep CAME with. Sure, unless you pop the hood, you could have a Chevy 454 underneath. Likely? No. Sure, a previous owner could have changed out the gear ratio. If the Jeep is otherwise completely stock......it's unlikely.
Just sayin'

Lots of folks mod their vehicles and then remove mods before selling. Its quite common, and with as many folks out there that regear, its a bit more likely than your suggesting.
But you can think and post whatever you want. This is after all a Jeep Cherokee internet forum. None of the guys here know anything.
So, on second though, yeah, you better call that stealership, wait on hold for the longest time, or ge GPS and make a bunch of calculations and such.
Don't trust any seasoned members, no sir!

I didn't say people on here don't know anything, nor to not trust seasoned members.
maybe because you're a seasoned member you think that guys new to the site don't know anything?
Lastly, on the topic of the thread.....you suggest to play the guessing game, but say that my suggestion of finding out for sure what gear ratio the Jeep came with stock is somehow wrong and mock me because somebody could have changed out the gear ratio? Correct me if im wrong, but i'm the only one that suggested a way to at least find out facts about his Jeep from the factory. After playing the guessing game of it came with either "3.07, 3.55, or 4.10s"...does your vague answer somehow prevent his Jeep from being tampered with by previous owners? Please step off of your high horse because you are a 'seasoned member' and lend respect to everyone the same.
In reality, the answer to the OP's question, unanimously, is "None of us have a clue what gear ratio you have" because, yes, somebody could have changed them out in the past. However, if you want to at least know what your Jeep came with, call the dealership.....it's still free. Or you could have the seasoned members throw out numbers from their seasoned brain housing group.
If you don't want to have some dude sitting behind a computer guess what gears are in your Jeep or pop open your diffs, just verify that your speedometer is reading correctly with the stock speedo gear. Much cleaner and less time consuming. Oh, and there aren't any calculations. Drive 45mph down the road. If your GPS says you're going 45mph...guess what........yep, you're going 45 mph, and you have the factory gears your Jeep came with...but wait, how will you know what gears came with your Jeep from the factory??? I have a humble suggestion that keeps your driveway gear-oil-free: Call your local dealership's service or parts department.
