Default How to tell what gear ratio's I have/Tow Package question...

How in the world do I tell if my Jeep came with a tow package from the factory? It has a hitch/receiver on it but no clue if it came like that.

A vin decoder didn't show anything either.

I hope it's factory TP because I would love 4:10 gears.

I don't believe that the 4.10 gears were ever part of a tow package, I know the XJs that come with the 2.5 liter 4 banger always come with 4.10 gears. The 6 cylinder XJs either came with 3.55 gears withe the auto tranny or 3.07 gears with the 5-speed.

It's really easy to figure out your gear ratio and all you need is a couple of jackstands and a piece of chalk. Jack up the rear axle and secure it on Jackstands. Put your transfer case in N. put a chalk mark on one of the U-joint caps on your rear u-joint on the rear driveshaft. Then draw a chalk line on the inside of one of your rear tires from the rim out to the tread. Now, just turn your driveshaft by hand until the tire makes one full turn. You gear ratio is determined by the number of turns of the driveshaft it takes for 1 turn of the tire. 3 and a half turns to 1 = 3.55 gears. 4 turns to 1 = 4.10 gears, etc.

Check for the ratio by jacking up the rear or putting it on a lift. There should be a tag on the rear differential that has the gear ratio on it.
If the tag is gone then you can get a rough estimate by marking a chalk mark on your tire and rotating the drive shaft until the tire has turned one full revolution. How many revolutions of the drive shaft did that take? 3 1/2 = 3.55 : 1 , or a little over 4 = 4.10 : 1 ratio.

I know how ratio's work, but I greatly appreciate the info!! I swear I read somewhere that the TP came with 4:10s, but I must have been mistaken. I'd assume that I've got the 3:55's because the ratio isn't exactly what I'd call "high" so I think it kinda rules out the 3:07's.

Thanks guys.

Also, I dont think that anything from the earily 90's model's on had anything other than 3.55's and 3.07's. Also, what axel do you have?? D35 or C8.25??

I just bought a 93 cherokee country, 4ltr, 5spd. the rear end needs replacing. I am trying to determine the gear ratio before searching, but the tag is missing on the cover. I will be trying the chalk / count rotations tomorrow. I was courious if this 3.07 with the 5spd was a safe bet?

Thanks

I don't know about one as new as a 99, but 87 through early 90's with a factory tow-package were given a d44.

Your 93 is the same era XJ as my 91. I would bet a paycheck that if you have the 4.0 HO and the AX-15 5-speed tranny, you most definitely have 3.07 gears in your axles...unless a PO did a gear swap on it.

Axle Gear Ratios
Jeep XJs came in several standard gearing ratios:
3.07:1, manual transmission, I6 engine.
3.54:1, automatic transmission, I6 engine with Dana 44 rear differential.
3.54:1, manual transmission, I4 diesel engine with Dana 35 rear differential.
3.55:1, automatic transmission, I6, V6 engines; manual transmission, I4 engine.
3.73:1, automatic transmission, I6, Tow Package, UpCountry Package.
4.10:1, manual transmission, V6; automatic transmission, I4 engine.
4.56:1, automatic transmission, I4, offroad or tow package.
this is off of Wikipedia, i have the tranny cooler, heavy duty radiator, and trailer hitch, and the hitch isnt a pep boys or a u haul cheappy hitch. so i'm assuming ive got the 3.73's, but im goin to try the wheel spin thing
