I live in Wyoming and use 85. Here we have 85, 87, and 91. What do you use in your xj and what are the pros and cons of the different types of gas? Was on the forum while filling up and thought of this..

85 is prone to pre-detonate for me,93 burns too slow and I get some misfires/backfiring
I don't really see 91 too often considering I go to bp most times.
87 is perfect,and gives me optimum mpg's
I have a renix 4.0

michigan here has
87, 89, 91 or 93 depending on station
i always run 87 octane, but i might switch to 91 or 93 and see if my mpg goes up
its about 20 cents more per gallon here....but if you fill up with 10 gallons it is only 2 dollars more...so not a big problem

87. More importantly is the brand and mixture. I try to get my fix of Shell, if I can't I'll grab Petro-Canada. For the reason why, see http://www.toptiergas.com/ and most threads regarding fuel economy and emissions tests.
Btw the guy who "has to" run 91OR in his 8.7:1 compression engine - you probably have the wrong spark plugs or some carbon build up.

I used to always buy Mobil gas 89 or 91 octane, it costs a bit more but does get better gas milage so I'm usually ahead in the long run. I do have my engine light on too.
In my DD (03 VW Jetta) i've had my engine light on for a year or so, dealer said Cat is dirty... I changed to Sunoco gas 91 octane, light went out & hasn't turned back on for 2 months now. Gonna change to Sonoco gas & see if it does the same magic!

If you live at higher altitudes, 85 is fine.
Generally speaking, run the lowest octane that does not cause pinging or vapor lock.
Anything more is wasted.

I run the 87 from Wally-World as it is the cheapest around here. I've tried gas in different octane from different places and can't tell the difference in mpg's. I have a '91, 4.0 on 3" and 31's with 3.55's. The higher price of "better" gas just doesn't seem worth it for me.
