What does the knock sensor do?

Engine: 4.0 with all of the noise and clatter
It tell the PCM when there is a knock, or preignition, and retards the timing. It will not keep the engine from turning over.

in mine it does nothing, i took it out and drove around with it....nothing! no difference. i would say it is the crankshaft position sensor, they go out for no reason at all

Ok, how about this, does the knock sensor go all the way through the block so if it were out there would be basically a big hole in it? If that's the case, could it cause a rough idle because air is escaping the hole?
