I am in the middle or prepping for paint. About 2/3 of the way from being done with sanding and panel removal.

How much paint did you buy to paint your cherokees? Not spray cans

I am actually spraying my cherokee and want to know how much to get.

I used a tad better than 3/4 gallon. I went with 4 coats.. if your doing two stage you shouldnt need that much.

cool thank you overlandxj

I dont know what i am going to do, single or double stage yet. i am going to "paint world" (our walmart of name brand auto paint) and going to talk with the employees there to see what they recommend as far as a single or a double stage paint.

I know that my cherokee orginally came with single stage paint.... any recommendations? I am going to be doing black. (satin or gloss is undecided yet)

Im pretty sure all cherokees came with two stage paint, as did everything since like the 1970's.

Thats not to say there is anything wrong with single stage, its easier to use and I actually think it looks a little better with certain colors.

I used a gallon the second time when I painted it red, and had a little bit left over for future touchup. That was enough for 5-6 coats.

Though I wouldnt do a satin finish if I were you, I had satin tan and it always looked pretty lousy I think. If its already black then it will be a pretty easy job, just go light and fast with the spraying and make sure you clean it with mineral spirits or something first if you ever wax it or your paint wont adhere properly.

And also, DONT DO IT OUTSIDE, you are going to get so much dust on it it isnt even funny. Get a garage if it is in any way possible.

How are you painting it? Are you making a make-shift paint booth in a garage, or just doing it outside?

I did basecoat/clearcoat about 2 quarts of each. I would recommend this if going with the gloss. If satin, I would do the single stage.

I am making a make-shift paint booth out of heavy grade (6mm) plastic Our garage is fully sealed and has a sealed floor as well. So i will cover the roof and the floor then i will make drops on every side then seal it all up. I have a mask and i have a sprayer. I am not doing it outside due to the dust.

Once i get it in the "booth" i am going to prep it with mineral spirits and a tac cloth(or several).

Then spray with many light coats. And since i live in AZ at my parents for the summer the heat in the garage will help the paint set up correctly, that and out 3% humidity lately.

After 1-2 weeks after the paint is fully cured i will go over it with a carbana wax.

I am leaning more towards gloss, I just love the way it looks

For all the chemical stuff it was like 240 dollars, after like primer, sandpaper and cleaning stuff and other supplies I prolly spend like 275 on the whole thing.

I primed mine but only because I had a flat finish under it and wanted it to come out smoother, you should be fine painting right over your stock paint.

It was urethane enamel paint. I think there might be one step up from that quality wise in a single stage but i'm not sure.

okay well sand paper was free, mineral spirits and tack clothes are free (previous project). I just want price of paint.

I Think i will get 2 quarts of paint at first and the needed additives should make it 3 quarts if not a gallon... (i hope)

I am going to be painting mainly the sides and front clip as i am going to bedline the roof since it gets tons of abuse (there are so many dents and gouges in my roof...)
