Default What do you think of this jeep?!

98k
Asking 5500
2 inch lift, newer springs.
Cat back exhaust
Everything seems is in great shape however back door window switches dont work

Only issue I have is the engine bay seems to have a slow leak by the manifolds. Seems to end up from the bay down to the trans shaft. Owner says it doesn't lose oil, runs great. After 100k I know it's not a we engine but thoughts on the pics if you think this is normal or a big issue.

I know the rear mail seal was fixed 3 years ago too

Thanks!

I can fix them if you like? (spelling) also nice jeep, try to get him down a bit. The leak could be the valve cover and if you get it change the Oil/Filter cause there is a "Fram" on there and they are known to cause problems (no flow-back valve) here is a list of long filters you can get...Tj

Hard to tell from the pics but the 4.0 is known for developing a leaking valve cover gasket as well as the O-rings on the oil filter adapter. Most likely not anything thats not an easy fix. I dont know what the markets like where you are, but I would'nt drop more than $4000 for it in perfect condition.

If the underside and interior are as clean as the side picture, I'd pay the price. That thing looks like new. Try an offer of $4500.

My 2nd choice

2000 classic.
134k
Asking $4800
rides great
Little leaky valve gaskets like the other one
Check engine light is on, buy he says it's the carbon build up in the throttle body.
Avg dents and dings.
Rode much softer than the sport

I'm so torn!!!!!

the first one has a fram. knock 1500 off of the price because you know that fram oil filters are garbage, have a poor paper element and check valve...

I'd be more interested in the green one. but again, I wouldn't spend more than $4 grand no matter what.

I'm not sure I'd buy the "carbon buildup" story. Insist on taking it to your local parts store and have them scan it before you think about buying it. The green one looks good and the price although still too high is a little better.

you'd have to educate me on that. I'm not sure what you mean. This is my first time dealing with jeeps. Been doing research but by far know enough.

$1500 off just for the oil filter choice?

Don't think I could get the green one for $4000... maybe 4400.

Silver one... I could probably get it for $5200-5300. Jeeps are holding their values around here.

I love them both. Because the Green Classic has OEM suspension it rides really nice. The Silver Sport rides rough because of the aftermarket lift kit.

Pros & Cons:

Silver Sport Pros:
Flawless body interior and out
KC lights (not shown)
Lift Kit
New exhaust
Newer rear main seal
Great tires
Low Mileage
Tinted rear windows
Looks great
College student's car... so father cared for it to make sure his son had a reliable car (i'd like to think)

Silver Sport Cons:
Valves look like they are leaking a bit
Rear door window switches aren't working
Rides Rough
Annoying Squeak in the rear seat when you hit bumps
no CD Player
Couldn't tell if the 4x4 mode made a noise because the exhaust was a bit louder
More expensive
Further away (1 hour away)

Green Classic Pros:
Nice Gunmetal wheels
Newer tires
Rides soft and more like a car
4x4 rode awesome
CD player
New water pump
Looks great
Cheaper
Closer (20 mins away)
Guy has owned jeeps in the past and seems to know how to take care of them

Green Classic Cons:
Check Engine Light On (have to take to mechanic to look at it)
Looks like it has the same leaky valves the silver one does.
few dings and dents
35,000 more miles
Passenger Side Window switch doesn't work
Driver's seat has a tear in it
Driver's front door stereo speaker doesn't work

This decision is killing me....

I'd go with the green.... (I think the squeak in the rear seat is a silver thing :-) ) j/k... Mine squeaks on certain bumps too <<<Silver 01...

If it were my decision I'd go with the green.... only after getting that check engine light checked and making sure it isn;t going to be a headache later on

Have u checked these 2 areas on both XJs? Pulled tranny dipstick & checked color of fluid? No such thing as CEL for intake carbon. My point is, it's easy to wax paint but good maintenance, or lack of it, is another story.

I'd say go with the silver one. It is very clean and lower miles.

I just bought a 2001 White Sport with 138k miles, New tires, new AC compressor, new rad, new heating core, and new water pump for $2500.
It was a steal, but then it overheated. Im sure it has a cracked cylinder head. Prob costs $1200 to fix.

The 2000 and 2001 models are known for their heads cracking.
MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THAT OUT BEFORE BUYING!

By the way....the way that engine bay looks on that silver one is what mine looks like. It is like that because it is leaking coolant and oil. Most likely due to a blown valve cover gasket or the head is cracked.

Here is a pic of mine

Great feedback guys

So far out of all the jeeps i've seen these two are in the best condition. Getting these for sub $4500 I don't think is going to happen.

The silver jeep is just about flawless inside and out. Only thing is the engine issue

Green one... well the guy isn't in a hurry to sell and doesn't want to "give it away"

I'm going to make an offer on the Silver one. I think 4800 is a fair price, though I think 5100 is the lowest i'll be able to get them.

I'd go silver one. My reasonings are it was a college kids car so mommy and daddy prolly made sure everything was perfect. Also its probably mostly highway miles. It has lower miles. And no cel light. Yeah it's a lil more expensive but it also has a small lift also aux lights and lower miles. And a great interior. Green one is nice. But it'll need work right away. Which sucks.
