Default What do you call the rubber/poly part between the coil spring and the axle??

Hey all - I've got metal-on-metal between my coil spring and my d30; I know that coil spring isolators go between the top of the spring and the body, but what do you call the part(s) that keep the bottom of the spring from grinding against the axle?

Sure appreciate the help!

Not really sure what you are talking about.
The coil just on the mount that is part of the diff at the bottom.

My mechanic said there ought to be something between the bottom of the coil and the big round things the springs sit on on the axle itself; I just can't remember what he called them. Every time I go over any bump at all I get all kinds of creaking and squeaking, and I figure it's got to be that metal-on-metal right there - surely something is supposed to be there? Maybe they're called spring seats?

Unless I am misunderstanding you.
Shot I grabbed off the internet.

Well look at that... looks like it's just sitting there, huh. I never even checked if I've got the coil isolators on the top... maybe that's where all my sounds are coming from! Thanks for the wisdom.

No, there's supposed to be a center thingy with a rubber doohickey on the bottom.

But not really sure why or how it would keep a coil spring from squeaking.

The bottom of the coil gets a retaining clip, like this. It clamps the coil to the bucket on the axle.

Good Sir Ralph,

Is it my tired eyes or are there no bolts securing the bottom of the shock in your photo? No clip for the coil, no bolts for the shock? Ralph, what are you doing up there???

Anyway, I looked it up; that doohickey is called a bump stop. Same idea as the bump stops on the rear. Different shape. If you don't have them, your XJ will explode, the forests will all die, small animals will spontaneously combust, and the fabric of the universe will be torn asunder.

Part #36 on this diagram.

And you can find all kinds of uber-cool high tech versions here.

That is just a photo I grabbed off the internet. I am pretty sure I see the lower shock bolts but not so sure about the clip for the coil.
What happened was that after you posted what you did I went out to my Jeep.
Not dressed to be crawling around under there but did feel this weird lip. And can't be sure if it is metal or rubber.
So I started poking around.
Oh by the way I am guessing that the OP is not talking about the isolator at the top or the bump stop (#36) either.
I found that shot here:
