What connects here in the dash?

I have a question.. what is supposed to go in the hole where the arrow is pointing? there's a connector there for something

On some models, there was a clock and on others, just a piece of plastic.

Ok. When i got my jeep it was exposed and didn't know what was supposed to be there.
