Not sure this belongs in tech so please forgive me if it's not.

My front door is missing a small piece that prevents it from swinging open wildly.

Please see pictures below comparing front to rear doors.

Does anyone know what this is called? Can I just pick one up at a hardware store or do I need to head to an auto parts shop?

you just need a bolt and nut to hold it there, nothing special needed.

 

Its not missing. You can pull it out and bolt it to the bracket

 

right, just checking if it could be any old bolt.

Use a bolt or get the exact pin from the Dealer. I find is that the pin is a better fit.

both my front doors were missing that too when i bought the XJ. I found a random bolt in my garage, through it in there, and everything is back to normal. win win for cheap jeep fixes.

 

So I'm trying to get this in there but I can't pull the arm out far enough to be able to get the bolt in there.

Any tips?

 

Grab it with pliers?

 

And spray some WD-40 in there while you're at it to loosen it up.

Buy the assembly, if I remember it's like $16 for both pieces. If you just try to use a bolt (as I did I think it was 6mm, what could be simpler?) you will never be able to take up the slop. When the pin falls out the bore in the bracket is wallowed out. Every time you open or close that door it will produce a very noticable "snapping" sound. Everyone from your family members to strangers @ the grocery store will stare at you wondering what the hell just happened. Spend the $16 & be done with it.

Easiest way to catch that rod is to almost close the door completely, stick a screwdriver or punch of the correct size through both the rod & the bracket. Open the door you will feel it catch on one of the stops, remove the tool.

1/4" Cotter Pin.



19¢ at any hardware store.
If you want to be fancy you can add 1/4" washers.

Close the door most of the way and slip it in with a needle nose pliers.

 

Not to hi-jack but while were on the subject I have that snapping sound when I open and close the door. I read that its the holes in the bracket that get worn. Is that the case or does replacing the pin help out? Can't seem to find the bracket anywhere.

 

My drivers door has worn out a bit at the mount. I suppose just getting a thicker bolt, or, just expand the pin to accommodate it.
