Hey everyone,

Could someone please point me in the direction of the technical term for the little switch in the t-case that illuminates the "4x4 part time" light in my '91 XJ?

If it matters, its an automatic AW4 with the NP231 and the disco Dana 30. Already replaced the bulb, and still nothing. I suspect something is wrong with the switch. However, everytime I search "4x4 light switch" or "4x4 indicator light" on any autoparts website or at the parts store, I'm either met with an "item not found" or a bunch of dumb confused looks.

Thanks ya'll.

Thank you! So does the earlier XJ's with the disco not have an indicator switch built into the t-case itself? Reason I ask, I was expecting something to this effect:

(Under No.1 in the pic)

Edit: nvm, disregard. I posted this right as you sent the second one with the link lol. Thanks again!

So does that mean the Disco D30 axle has a light switch of its own? Or is the diagram simply making reference to the t-case switch?

Thanks again for helping me overcome my ignorance, one post at a time lol.

So autozone is giving me two options as well (now that I have the correct name):

Electronic switch-

(I'm guessing the ball-end is an update?)

AND

the vacuum switch-

(same deal with the ball-end?)

Yours is the vacuum im pretty sure. There is always vacuum on that switch, when you move your tcase lever an arm acts on that ball which moves and let's vacuum go through the switch engaging the CAD and turning on the part time light. The electronic one is just a contactor.

I had two choices on my 98 the only difference was the threaded length on the switch. Mine took the short one long would not work. Ball end is spring loaded by the feel & must engage the switch when 4x4 lever is pulled up !

I'm gonna climb under the old girl and see if both are there. It seems like my 4x4 works fine. I'll check back. Is the vacuum switch just a contact that lights up the 4x4 light or does it act as an actual on/off switch for the 4x4?

God, I swear, the Disco D30 was the dumbest idea ever concieved.

Since you guys are already on this subject, does any one know what the actual name of the plug that plugs into the vacuum switch? Or where I can get that plug new? Trying to avoid more time at pick n pull...wife says I spend more time there than at home!

After more research though, I think mine is the vacuum switch. Appariently it's located on the t-case and supplies various directions of vacuum to control the shift fork. All so ignorant in design.
