And also, can anyone tell me where to look for FSM for my 1996 XJ, other than eBay? And is PayPal necessary if you want to buy something on eBay?

On a 96 its keyless entry. I think 97 and up the sensor is probably in the dome light housing but in 96 it was right between the sunvisors.

Like the above post stated, It is the keyless entry sensor and it works off the "infra-red" style keyfob (remote). If you are looking on e-bay or other web sites make sure the remote states "infra-red" and not the new radio wave based remote. The infra-red remote is a short distance and usually needs to be in-line with the dome sensor.
The remote usually only have 2 buttons (lock/unlock) and are easy to program (don't require the dealer to program). Auto-Zone sells remotes and there is a website "remotes4less" and the cost is somewhere around $65. The dealer sells the remote for $125 or more.

Mine has it - little black plastic dome up by the sun visors in the middle. That is the remote entry sesor - mine is a 95. Looking for a remote FOB for mine but they are all crazy expensive. :-(

Does anyone know of where to get cheaper fobs? or is it just something we have to deal with on older vehicles? My dad just got 1 for his 07 silverado for 15-20 bucks..

They really dont give you the programmable instructions with the 60 dollar fob? i think that is kind of sleazey
