Just noticed when my front passenger door is open that the brake lights come on.. no key in the switch. I guess I'll look for broken/shorted wires where the bundle goes from the door to the frame.. but why the brake lights???

That's bizarre.

When electrical things get bizarre, check your grounds. See my sig, #1m, for a link to some pics of the ground locations.

You have no idea how many times I have repeated your advice to other people.
Soon as the words electrical problems come out of there mouth I stop them right there and tell them what you always say.
Guy I know was having problems with the rear light on his WJ.
Now I have no idea if the ground in the back behind the spare tire are the same as an XJ.
I told him where they would be in my Jeep and suggested he go in there and look.
I see him later, he did what I told him (what you always say I should say), and he fixed it. LOL.

So it was actually my fault.. I had a ground off in the back seat because I was doing some rust control... screwed that ground back on and all was back to normal. Of course this was after I took the whole wire harness out of the door. BUT... I don't consider that a bad thing as I did find one cracked wire (wasn't touching anything) and now I know the harness is good.
