Hi folks, I started experiencing issue recently. It happens intermittently and basically when i'm driving past 40 mph it has a weird stutter and then around 55 mph or so the tach will go from 1500 rpms all the way up to 2300 rpms with the same stutter i experienced. If i let off the gas the tach will go back to normal but soon as i press on the gas to keep it around 55 mph the rpms go back up to 2000 rpms. Also what i've noticed is when i get off the highway and stop at a light it feels like i have to press on the gas pedal even more to get the car moving. The tach has to reach 1500 rpms before the car actually starts moving. It seems like it's skipping first gear or something. Then other days the jeep will drive just fine. I've checked just the basics, fluid levels are fine and i replaced the tps 6 months ago. The jeep is a 96 cherokee sport 4 sp auto. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

 

Is the fluid brown or smell burnt?it sounds like it is going out,tps will cause shifting issues but not the same as described,tps will cause it to shift at higher rpms,and not lock-up,but your trany sounds like it is going out.

 

nah, the fluid is still red and really doesn't smell burnt, i had changed the tranny fluid and filter last year. damn that sucks if it's the tranny.
