Default Weird overheat indication

So i reviewed anywhere i could about what is going on with my jeep.. Maybe yall can help me figure what happened... i was off-roading in some mud then suddenly i get a check guages lights then i appear over and i see the engine is overheating apparently. I cut off the engine let it sit for a while. i started it back up nothing the guage was sitting where it always sit so not to take any chances i started to head home a lil bit in to the trip home it does it again breifly check gauges light came on and engine temp was maxed out after about 6 seconds light goes out and gauge is back to normal. it did it for a while got back home let it sit over night and now its fine. I have no idea what is going on... im not sure just some water touched a wire or false indication.. any ideas because im all out??

It is possible a connection got wet. Other possibilities I can think of are a flaky sending unit or the insulation bad on a wire (intermittently grounding).

I was going to ask if the hood had been raised.
