Default Weird loud clunking noise

Hello, I have a 94 XJ automatic running everything stock except a flowmaster, with a little over 100k on it. Recently, Ive been hearing/feeling this loud clunk under the console, around the shifter that happens when i come to a quick stop from a fast speed. When i go to move again, even just letting off the gas pedel, there goes the boom. the clunk. and than after the clunk, it sound like something in the same area is loose and bouncing around, making little clunks. but the little clunking part is random, it doesn't happen all the time. Honestly im not too great with cars (yet) so im reaching out for advice on what this could be. i have a bad feeling its the tranny or tcase cause they both look a little wet with the red juice any help would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like your slip yoke needs greasing. This happened all the time to me before lifting and installing an SYE. The slip yoke is in the area where the driveshaft exits the transfer case. Search for "Lubing your Slip Yoke" and I believe there is a write up for it. It's a fairly easy project with just basic tools.

Look at the head pipe on the exhaust.Mine did this and the hanger broke for the head pipe so it was hitting the cross member.Had a it welded and never happened again.

I was reading around and saw that on <95 models the slip yolk is lubed from the tranny via the tranny fluid...does it still need to be lubed manually?

and the on and off again clunking could be the exhaust pipes, cause i used one of them plumming clamps to clamp it onto that bar thats right under it since it was basically laying on it anyway, and that made the noise go away a little.

Once it is cool, climb underneth with a flashlight and start poking at stuff. Check your exhaust, drive shafts, and anything you can see. That might be good start, you learn by getting your hands dirty.

Definatly look at SYE lube

You said something about red stuff leaking?? I am assuming you are referring to ATF? check your trans fuid levels and make sure there is enough in it. Whenever I think of leaking ATF I think of an overheating tranny.

I also noticed and should have posted with my original comment, that if im coming to a quick stop, (40-0, 30-0), if I throw it in neutral and do most of the braking until im down to five or ten miles an hour and throw it in drive, i don't get the clunk and transmission shifts smoothly into gear. Also, I know its a common thing to do with standard transmission, but is that a bad thing to do with an AT?
