Default On the way to be inspected...but had a (slight?) problem...Update 8th Post....

'95 Sport 4.0 Auto, 4 Dr. 178k miles.

The Cherokee had mostly sat (intermittently started) for 2 years before I bought it..

Finally...1 year after purchase, 9 months after getting it towed home, repairs including: Replace Radiator (cause of the tow), Water Pump, Alternator, Belt, Starter, Battery, Floor Pans (all around), hood cable and latches (fixed--not replaced), headlight spring missing, hatch shock, T-Case (had a not working 242, went to a used 231), shorted ignition wire, replaced CPS, U-Joints at front wheels, front brakes. Oil Change, Diffs and T-case full of fluid. Auto Trans fluid is clean and bright red (and to the proper level).

Still needs: Intermittent working of windows, stereo install, power locks not working...and I'm sure I'll find a few more things...

Took it 7 miles up the street to get it inspected (and emissions here in PA).

No problem at low speeds (all in 2 WD) but when I got up to highway speeds...4 or 5 times there was a 'clunk' at speed...not accelerating, not decelerating, just driving. Pushing on the gas made it down shift fine. Easing up (to maintain speed) didn't cause it immediately. The closest I could come to describing it would be to liken it to an old Mercedes Benz 190D with 225k miles...it would "clunk" into gears. More a feeling than a sound. However, it didn't seem to be trying to shift at all (RPMs were about 1.5k to 1.8k when it happened...and the RPMs didn't drop or rise like it was changing gears).

Didn't seem to effect the driveablity at all...and it was infrequent enough I couldn't tell where it was coming from other than below me as I was driving.

Any thoughts?

If it shifts fine and you didn't see the tach fluctuating, it wasn't the trans. It could be a trans or engine mount, bushing, bad shock...?

The road was relatively smooth, so maybe not the shocks.

I'll check some other stuff (and check my connections at the driveshafts, etc. when I get it back).

Just needed a few ideas on what to check.

Thanks!

I think the slip yoke will unload and thunk or clunk if it needs lubricated, but I would expect to feel that when pulling out.

Where in Pa?

Default Update...

Passed inspection.

Couple of minor issues (My comments in () after the reported problems).

#1. Dry rotted sway bar bushings (or links..not sure...however they seem solid, so I'll put them in the middle of the list to do).

#2. Oil 'everywhere underneath' (comment hand written was 'valve cover gasket leaking...so that goes on the list..was 1 Qt low).

#3. Dirty trans fluid (OK, that was one thing I didn't get done..but it's red, not brown or black).

#4. Coolant tested bad (hard to believe this one...I replaced the radiator and H2O pump, so most of the old coolant came out from that...seems clean when I looked...so unless the remaining old coolant &/or sludge changed the PH substantially, it's probably a false positive test).

Also...recommended T-Case fluid change (I swapped the 242 for a 231 and put fluid in it...so that's a no-go also).

The 'clunk' happened 2 times on the way home...and in paying attention, almost seemed to be behind me as driving rather than from the front of the car...brother suggested that it might be the rear driveshaft U-Joint, and when changing the T-case, the caps were a bit loose at that end....so I'll probably try that. Won't get a chance to do it until next week (we're moving and I need to use the Cherokee to haul some stuff)...hopefully it won't go bad before then...
