Default Waterpump goop or no goop

I am doing the water pump on my sons '96 cherokee. Have done this before just can't remember if you're supposed to use sealant or if the gasket is enough?

I clean the mating surfaces, and then use a skim coat (a very thin coat) of permatex (for water pumps and thermostats) on the gasket and surfaces. Just enough to compensate for any deep scratches or uneven mating surfaces. Is it required? no. But if using the gasket only, you are depending on the surfaces being in very good condition. It only takes about 2 minutes longer, and it is not hard to clean off the surfaces in a few years when things get done again. So I consider it good insurance. Goop required? No. I prefer it though.

haha.
I once used too much silicone doing the water pump on my old landcruiser and ended up with bits of it floating around in the radiator.
