How old is the pump and are you referring to the mating surfaces seal?

Unusual for a gasket to leak unless it was a replacement that improperly installed. There is a "weep hole" indicating packing/bearing failure in the pump that would be easily mistaken for a "bad gasket". It is a considerable amount of work to R&R the pump. Unless it's a nearly new pump I would spend the $50.00 for a NAPA pump and call it a day. YMMV

^^^what he said. My theory is, unless it's fairly new (which you stated yours is original), you've already got it out, you might as well replace it to save yourself the headache of having to do it again. Pay me now or PAY ME later...

you can get a new water pump for 25 bucks. you have to be nuts to put the old one back on. While you are at it change the thermostat

I agree with the rest. A water pump is something that doesn't give you a warning when it's about to ruin your day. If you've got it off, replace it. Same with the T-stat. I used to test the T-stat, but now I just go new. Must be my new found maturity.... or, not.
