Default Older XJ Fuel Tank Skid on newer XJ

Found a stock fuel skid from a '94 XJ (that is what the seller said it was). I have read that they fit, but needs some modification. Any one know how much modding it takes to make it fiton a '98 XJ. Does theskid go on before the hitch or after?

Here is a picture the the seller sent me.

OK. Since no one has anything to say or any experience here, I will will go get it on Saturday and let you all know what I find out, if anyone is interested.

I'm also picking up a front driveshaft and possible a ZJ steering setup while I am there so I will have lots to do.

Feel free to comment if you know anything about the fuel tank skids.

I have a newer one on my 96. Had to mod it pretty good to fit. The newer ones have a smaller tank so it should fit fairly easy!

This thread shows how to fit a pre 96 Gas tank skid on 97

But, note the skids in the photos at the bottom of the page.

The skid in your photo looks more like the ZJ skid than the XJ skid. If that's the case, it will fit with a few small mods:

I have a skid off a 93 on my 98, I just modified the rear of the skid with some big crescent wrenches(starting it bending in the right direction) And finnesed it shall we say, with a BFH till it fit into place. Seems the later models have an angle on the rear of the tank where as the earlier models are more square. Mine is installed after the hitch using the hitch hardware, hth's.

I think you're right. The seller said they had both and didn't really clarify which it came off of. Well it seems if that's the case it will be easier. Thanks for the help. I knew I had read about it in a post on one of the forums but could not find it for the life of me.
