water pump issue??
I have an 1989 Cherokee with the 4L. The water pump started squeeling and it over heated. I changed it and the new one started doing the same thing. The dealer told me there are 2 different sizes so i bought the other size and its squeeling also. Any suggestions???? Im at a loss.
Thanks
Thanks
The original water pump was locked up. The other two have had a loud squeel like some thing is locked up, but there is nothing. I put a stethescope on the water pump and can not here any thing turning.
Is there a pump that the fins on it spin the oposite way?? I have looked it ip and the belt is on correct. Im at a loss.

Last time I changed out my WP, I found a piece of loose metal in the block. It looked like a piece of the casting. Maybe there's something in your cooling system that jams the WP.

I have come to never assume replacement parts, new or reman, actually perform as intended. Just the way of mass market stuff these days. Had serious issues with my early XJ. Spent hundreds on it to solve a problem that was a faulty new dist cap.
This is always frustrating.

Yes it is very frustrating. I just ordered a new pump, idler pully and fsn clutch from Summit. Figured I might as well get almost all of it at once then I know every thing will be new.
I normally wound't go through this much hassle but its in such good shape it would be a shame not to fix it.

OK. Sorry for the delay in replying... I Changed the water pump with high flow one, fan clutch, and a new belt. It finally stopped over heating while I was driving around town. Then I drove it to work the other day and it got hot. I got it home added antifreeze and took it out on the HWY again and some thing. It runs fine if you keep it under 60 and over heats if you go over 65. Im Stumped...

I replaced the belt on mine when I first got it just to prevent future problems because it was looking a bit dry. I found that when adjusting it up, it was a bit intimidating how much I had to tighten it to keep it from slipping on the Water Pump. I just knew it was going to snap because it was so tight. That was over 8 months ago and it is still going...

My Jeep ran hot and then the rad started leaking. I replaced the rad, hoses and thermostat and it runs cooler than it ever did. So I'm thinking the rad was plugging up. A new rad isn't too expensive and not hard to change out if you have the time and money. The rad in my '87 still said AMC so I assume it was original-28 years is pretty good.
