Just thought I would let everybody know I did it dry. Torqued to spec. All appears well so.......

I just did my water pump and t-stat. I used high tack gasket sealant and when bleeding the air out little pieces of the sealant floated to the top, I don't like the idea of that stuff floating around let alone any rtv. Just my .02

 

I agree. Less is more. How did cars from the olden days get by without RTV?

I'm not sure, but I think Ralph torqued the nuts on his replacement toilet seat last week.

 

Water pump gaskets are usually designed to absorb moisture and expand slightly, helping to form a watertight connection. I think they don't recommend any foreign sealants on it because it could interfere with that normal process.

I used permatex (for waterpumps) on mine, (just a very thin layer) to help account for any scratches or imperfections in the mating surfaces (of which there were a few). Worked fine. But I can see why they stick to their dry-only recommendation.
