Default Washer Fluid Level Sensor Circuit

1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport with constant windshield washer low warning light. Easy answer is to unplug the sensor to make the light go out, but that's not a great answer. We replaced the sensor, but that didn't help. The replacement, which looks identical to the one that was in place, appears to need to be installed with the electrical connection oriented down to work properly, but there is no room for that before hitting the wheel well. Has anybody run into this or am I missing something really stupid?

Please attach photographs.
So an open circuit means no light and a closed circuit means a light, right? What are the resistances of the old compared to new ones in the same situations?

sensor that was in place, same as new one

The way this pictured sensor is sitting with the electrical connection up is the only way it will fit into the reservoir because the bottom of the reservoir sits on the front right wheel well. With the fluid in the tank, the float stays as pictured, keeping the circuit closed and the light on. If the fluid level drops, then the float will drop, opening the circuit, light off...opposite of the way the switch needs to behave...hence my confusion and wondering if this was even the right sensor in the first place, which we tried to replace with the wrong one again...
