I don't think it's out of the question at all to run 37s on an XJ. Especially for a mud machine. It won't be super cheap to do, but I bet you could fit it into a reasonable budget. my buddie has a 97 cherokee with 9 inches of lift 35's but they doo rub but he has no fender trimming he is running a ford 9 inch rear with a dana 44 front. u can run stock axles i would up the gears to like 5:12 u could get away with like 6.5 inches of lift with a lot of fender trimming to run 37s. i would recommend going full with axles ford axles if using the origional inline 6 and like 8 inches of lift with fender trimming.
