Default voltage regulator problem? please help

so i was deiving and all of the sudden it stoped charging and non nessesary thing start going out an then of course the engine farts and i am on the side of the road asking for a jump and then it decides to charge again. it stops charging randomly (bout once a week give or take) i was thinking voltage regulator is craping out since it will charge fine mosty and i do have two twelves bumping in the back and lights on the top so it does have some strain most of the time it does fine. so i cracked the altenator open and i cant find it. i originally thought it was the rediculous relay due to a starting problem as well but it remained. now i am just just scratching my head any one have any ideas?

it is my first jeep so i dont know to much bout jeeps but i love it and plan on making it a project ut i got to fix the basics first

specs:
1990 Jeep Cherokee Laredo, 4x4, automatic (unfortunatly), inline 6

The voltage regulator is inside the computer.

Clean your battery cables even if they look good. -

not on the Renix IIRC. On Renix XJ's, the VR is an external unit built into the alternator.

OP, sounds to me like your alt is tossing in the towel. On my '91, the alt started randomly charging, then would not charge, then charge, on a random weekly or daily basis. I ignored it like a fool, and the alt finally died altogether while I was driving my family to our hometown. By the grace of God, we made it about 30 miles on no alternator at night with lights on. Thanks God.

Change out the alternator, and MAKE SURE you get the right unit. I wish 5-90 was here, because he has the exact details on the difference between 91+ XJ alts and Renix Alts.

Hope this helps!

Or you could do the alt. swap to the 136amp ZJ alt. since your running a larger draw. Check the wright up section

Is the Renix alternator a standard GM Delcotron? Rambler was famous for using other brands.

I think it's a CS-130 Delco.

Hello guys, I know the thread it's old but I'll give my 2 cents, I am not an expert on electromechanics but I do know Jeep used a few brands like Nippodenso, Delco, and the big ugly alt used on almost all Dodge, I remember the one my dead Aries K had, I also remember when the voltage regulator is located in the ECM I installed an external VR most of the time we used Ford external VR.
