Default VIN and other identification

I recently came across a part of xjjeeps.com where there are charts and explanations of what the numbers and letters in the VIN number and other tags mean. I found most of the information in the VIN number, but there are a few things that arent explained. The 9th letter in the sequence is O. It says that it is the check point letter, but I have no idea what significance that has. The 11th digit is an L. I know the K before it is for the 89 model year and L would mean 90, but why is L there also if I have an 89? The last 6 digits are the sequential serial number, what does that mean? It is 572101. There is a chart called "date code correlation table" but it does not relate to anything in the VIN number. Can someone help me on what these numbers and letters mean? Also, there is another tag that is on the body right near the driver sire hood bracket. it is a metal tag and it also has the VIN number along with some other random numbers and letters on it. What does all that mean? Thanks for any help!

Yeah, I knew those two. I just don't know what the 9th, 11th, and the last 6 numbers are. And, I have an L for my engine code :P

The last 6 Digits, or the sequential serial number, is where it falls in the number of Jeeps built that year.
For example, if the numbers were 010000, then it's the 10,000th Jeep vehicle built that year.

Here is a site with PDF format Mopar - Chrysler OEM parts catalogs for your year XJ. These are handy because they show exploded views of every thing. Not just for the part numbers.http://www.xjjeeps.com/ And it is FREE. If you look through the catalog, In the begining it explains the vin number and such. Here is another site that, if you fill it out. Asking for your org. build sheet, they will e-mail it back in a few days. they will tell everything your XJ came with. http://www.jeep.com/wccsapp/universa...ull&category=U

ol"blue, I'm guessing that's out of any jeep model right? I doubt there were over half a million cherokees made in 89, there were only 3 million made in the 17 years of production. That's where I got confused over that one.

91 limited, that's where I got all my info from. It made me confused. It didn't really specify on some digits of the VIN number. And I also got a list of what my jeep came with from the jeep website. I did the whole e-mail thing already with them. But thanks anyway!

Yes, that's where it fits in the sequence of total Jeep vehicles produced in that particular year. All models included.

Post your VIN. I'll see if I can decipher one after 20 years.

Thanks! I couldn't figure out which plant it came from. The site only listed 2 and mine was different. I guess I'll have to do a little more research on the check number.
