Default Vibration/Grinding while accelerating in first gear

I have a 2000 cherokee sport 4wd standard 5 speed that has 180k miles on it. Within the last month I have noticed if I accelerate hard in first gear, I get almost grind sound coming from either the engine or below me(only way to describe it), and almost feel a little bit of resistance, like its not getting its full power when hitting the gas. When I drive normalling, it drives very smooth and is perfect with no vibration/grinding. I changed both front and rear u joints on the rear drive shaft and it is still there. When I put it in to 4wd and take off on full acceleration in first gear the noise is gone. It is almost like there is too much torque in 2wd, and when I put it into 4wd, it dispurses the torque to both front and back and it can handle the acceleration better. Im scared to think it is something with my transmission, but could it be low transmission fluid? It hasnt gotten any worse since I've noticed it, just got me puzzled. Thanks for any input!

It might be the transfer case. Does it do it in 2wd if you start in 2nd gear?

It only does it in first gear. WHat would be the problem if it was the transfer case? I asked around, and one guy said it coule be my transmission, and another said it could be my front differentials??? But I do not know. If my transmission fluid was low, would it cause this?

Sounds like transmission to me, maybe broken or worn gear tooth?

I just had someone drive my jeep and see what he thought it was. He is not a mechanic but is pretty sure that it sounds like the clutch is just slipping and when accelerating hard, that is what I feel. What do you think? If so, is there a clutch adjustment that I could do without dropping the transmisison?

I have the same problem!!! It has had me puzzled for months. it only does it during hard acceleration but drives great any other time. If your buddy says its the clutch then my theory could be right about my torque converter going bad (I have an auto obviously) Glad to see im not the only one.

I know this is an old thread, but I am having the same issue. I put a new clutch in it cause it needed it, and noise was still there. My guess is that the problem is bad motor mounts. If you look at the fan shroud, and you see signs of rubbing, than that is most likely the case...

If I was in the position of any of you guys, the very first place I'd check is the transmission mount. Get underneath and push up on the tranny with a good amount of force and see how much, if any movement there is

What would the transmission mount do to cause that?

It will cause the entire drivetrain to move around causing all sorts of clunking and vibration. It happened to me once before

Sounds like a gear grind though. I will check it out seeing as I will be under there today.

I just wanted to give you one place to rule out first. A place that is a lot easier to check than the internals of the transmission

If it is more of a knock then it is probably the tranny mount. When mine went out it would knock while i was idling or when i went over rough terrain the whole driveline would be jumping around ahah.
Check out the mount it only takes a couple seconds
