Be nice to know where in the world you are and how accessible diesel mechanics are near you. I'm thinking around $1200 USD.

Okay, this is a bit of a **** for you, but Eric O. at Main Street Auto Repair LLC in Avoca, NY, northwest of Corning (See him on YouTube) does excellent work at a fair price. He worked for his Dad on the big rigs, then opened his own shop working on regular cars. He says you can drop by and get an estimate, but don't call the shop because too many people do and they only want to chat. It takes up way too much time. From his reputation and watching his videos, I can tell he's a straight shooter and won't do a sloppy job. Watch some of his videos and see if you'd like to talk to him. He's got a WJ that he put a long arm lift on and the thing is mint!

Apologies guys, this was my first ever post here — the Jeep is in France, but at least I’ve got a ballpark now for the amount of labour involved. Thanks to all for the speedy replies! 🙏

I was wondering because not too many early diesel jeeps made it back here. I believe they were only available in Europe. I know one guy who bought one in Germany while he was stationed there and brought it back home with him. He said it was tough to get parts for it.

A 2.1 diesel was a factory option here from 84-86 I believe. They didn't have much power but you could get close to 30 mpg out of them.

There was a 2.5l 4 cylinder diesel option in the UK and Europe. It was a pretty common engine over here but I prefer the 4.0 because it's cheaper to run once you convert to LPG
and the 4.0 is THE Jeep engine.
